GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Public Works Superintendent – Streets, Parks, and Facilities Division is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and improvement activities of the town’s streets, parks, and municipal facilities. This role supervises field staff, coordinates work schedules, ensures compliance with safety standards, and maintains high-quality public infrastructure and spaces for residents.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervision & Leadership
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate field crews assigned to streets, parks, and facilities maintenance
  • Assign daily work tasks, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of projects
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and teamwork
  • Assist in hiring, onboarding, and disciplinary actions as needed
  • Operations & Maintenance
  • Oversee maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, parks, landscaping, and town buildings, facilities and structures
  • Ensure proper upkeep of public spaces including mowing, irrigation, playgrounds, and amenities
  • Monitor and maintain Town-owned buildings, equipment, and infrastructure
  • Coordinate routine inspections to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns
  • Project Coordination
  • Plan and oversee small to mid-sized maintenance and improvement projects
  • Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and other departments as necessary
  • Track project timelines, materials, and labor usage
  • Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce safety policies and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Conduct safety meetings and training sessions
  • Respond to emergencies such as severe weather events, infrastructure failures, or public hazards
  • Administrative Duties
  • Maintain accurate records of work orders, inspections, and maintenance activities
  • Assist in budget preparation and monitor expenditures
  • Manage inventory of tools, materials, supplies, and equipment
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and service requests in a professional manner
  • Other duties
  • Assist other Public Works divisions and Town departments as needed
  • Assist with Town event and community activity planning, set-up, and execution
  • Subject to recurring on-call duties after hours, weekends, and holidays
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical training preferred
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in public works, construction, maintenance, or related field
  • At least 1–2 years of supervisory experience preferred
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of street maintenance, park operations, landscaping, and facility upkeep
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Ability to read plans, schedules, and work orders
  • Familiarity with equipment operation and maintenance
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills
  • Basic computer skills for reporting and scheduling
  • Certifications & Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred or ability to obtain)
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Ability to obtain relevant licenses or certifications as required

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and equipment operation
  • On-call availability for emergencies, weekends, or after-hours work as needed
